General Memory Installation Rules:

NOTE: The Memory Controller resides on the CPU.

(If No CPU is present in socket then you will not see memory installed in the associated DIMM bank).

 

BL870c_i2  DIMM numbering follows the ISS Proliant DIMM numbering convention.

 

Supports 4GB, 8GB & 16GB DIMMS (8GB & 16GB support in SR2).

There is no 2GB DIMM support.

 

  • Install DIMMs in QUADS of Identical DIMMs (also known as a “memory module”).  Highest size 1st, followed by lower DIMM sizes.

  • Only DIMMs qualified by HP are supported. 
  • DIMMs must be low-profile (LP) (1.2” tall), standard DDR3 registered ECC SDRAM HP PC3-10600 DIMMs for the 4GB and HP PC3-8500 or PC3-10600 DIMMs for the 8GB and 16GB.
  • DO NOT mix DIMM Sizes in a quad.

  • Only 4GB & 8GB DIMMs quads can be mixed on a Blade.

  • Only populate the DIMMs associated with a populated CPU socket.

  • The DIMM slots associated with each processor are numbered 1 through 12, A through F.

  • Install DIMMs in alphabetical order, rather than numerical order. Ie, A's 1st then B's then C's etc.

  • Install DiMMs associated with populated CPU sockets ONLY.

  • If there is only one CPU installed, install DIMMs associated with that CPU.

  • CPU0 would normally be the 1st CPU installed.

  • If CPU1 is the only CPU socket populated (for troubleshooting reasons) install DIMMs associated with CPU1.

  • Install both CPU's if using more than one quad of memory.

  • If Both CPU's are installed install DIMMs evenly across DIMM banks associated with both CPU Sockets.

  • The system will boot with memory loaded on only one CPU.  However, from a performance perspective, this is not a recommended configuration.

  • Load quad A & B first, then C & D, then E&F for each CPU installed & equally across both blades in the BL870c_i2. See below:
